Schönböken is located on the road linking Neumünster and Plön in Schleswig-Holstein. The Zen centre is a former aristocratic estate. The Schönböken estate was founded in 1805 by a wealthy Hamburg citizen and has experienced a chequered history over the course of almost two hundred years.
In 1989, the fate of the Schönböken estate changed again and it became a place of authentic, traditional Zen practice.
The Zen Centre was built in a neo-Gothic style manor house and a brick gatehouse with a bell tower. The entire property comprises around five hectares of green space (a park formerly laid out as an English garden with ponds, bridges and many old trees).
